Engine temperature creeping up during summer dune drives – any fixes?

  • Forum Backlinks

Been having a bit of a worrying issue lately when I take my FJ out to the desert during the hotter months. Everything runs fine on the way there and on the highway but once I start doing some proper dune driving especially on longer slopes the temperature gauge starts climbing higher than I'm comfortable with. I usually stop and let it cool down but it's kind of killing the vibe when you have to keep taking breaks. I've been looking into tips for protecting engines in extreme heat and found a pretty detailed article on dubaiweekly that talked about upgraded radiators and better cooling systems for desert conditions. Apparently stock setups sometimes struggle when you're pushing the engine hard in 45 degree heat which makes sense. I'm thinking maybe a bigger radiator or an oil cooler might help but I don't want to throw money at the wrong thing. Has anyone here upgraded their cooling system specifically for desert driving and actually noticed a difference? Also wondering if there's any simple stuff I might have missed like coolant mixture ratios or something.
