How to Write a Strong Personal Statement

  • Alexa Shaw

If you’re not sure what to say or where to start, writing a personal statement might be hard. There are personal statement writing services that may assist you with this, but the most important thing is to make sure that your statement really portrays you. Start by stating why you want to take that class or why you are interested in that opportunity and what made you decide so. Then you may refer to any experiences from your schooling, job, volunteering or daily life that have helped you build important skills or a clearer sense of your future.

Avoid turning the statement into a list of accomplishments. More importantly, it’s about telling your stories in your own voice and expressing what you learnt from them. A short example generally tells the reader more than a large list of events. Use simple, plain English and avoid imitation or highly polished language. Once you have got your first draft down, put it away for a little while and then read it again. You may see things that need to be changed, things that are repeated, or phrases that don’t sound like you.
